Professor James Sloam
James Sloam is Professor of Politics at Royal Holloway, University of London. His research focuses on the civic and political engagement of young people in established democracies, youth environmental activism, and strategies to involve young people in the making of public policy.
James' recent publications have shed light on the relationship between youth, sustainability and democracy (Cities 2022) and the nature of youth-led environmental movements (Youth Studies 2022). This work is the result of several collaborative projects: with the Greater London Authority ('Young Londoners' Priorities for a Sustainable City', 2019; and British Academy-funded research ('How Young People can Shape Environmental Policy in Urban Spaces’, 2023).
James' ongoing research investigates how young people (particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds) can effectively engage with policy-makers to generate a more inclusive and sustainable public policy, including a forthcoming monograph, 'Turning Youth Voice into Public Policy: The Promise of Urban Democracy', and chapter on ‘Youth, Sustainability and Democracy' for the United Nation's World Public Sector Report.
